Arthritis

According to the Arthritis Foundation, there are more than 100 types of arthritis and related conditions. Arthritis is most common in women, but can occur in any age, race or sex and is the number one cause of disability in the United States. The symptoms with arthritis can be mild to severe and can come and go. Traditional treatments involve physical therapy, medications, dietary changes and exercise.

Osteoarthritis

As the most common type of arthritis, it can affect any joint, but primarily affects the joints in the hands, spine, hips and knees. Although once considered to be caused by wear and tear, research now suggests that OA involves the whole joint, not just the cartilage. The bones in the affected joints weaken connective tissue deteriorates and inflammation damages the lining of the joint.

Autoimmune Inflammatory Arthritis

When the immune system is overactive, it begins to attack the body and healthy tissue, including joints in the spine, hands, and feet. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common type, while Psoriatic arthritis, gout juvenile arthritis are also types of autoimmune inflammatory arthritis. The cause is not always known, but there is usually something that triggers the response in people who have a genetic predisposition such as a virus, stress or smoking. Research has also shown that there is a connection between microbes in the gut and Autoimmune Disease such as RA.
