Heart Attack

Heart Attack

According to the CDC, 805,000 people have a heart attack in the United States each year. A new study shows that deaths caused by heart attacks began rising significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, the data showed that deaths caused by heart attacks were declining. The report also showed that even though the rates of death increased with all age groups, the increase in deaths from heart attacks were most significant in those ages 25-44, an age group that is not typically considered at an increased risk for heart attack, at a 23-34% increase. During a heart attack, the muscle of the heart is damaged to lack of blood supply and oxygen to the cells. It is critical to restore the blood supply to the heart.

Risk Factors for a Heart Attack

  • Diabetes
  • Overweight/Obesity
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Physical inactivity
  • Excessive alcohol use
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Smoking

Complications from a Heart Attack

  • Arrhythmias
  • Anoxic brain injury
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Chest pain/Angina
  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Thromboembolism
  • Pericarditis
  • Anxiety

Our Approach to Heart Attack

How The Oxford Center Can Help

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) decreases inflammation, oxygenates the entire body, stimulates the growth of new healthy blood vessels, and releases stem cells, up to 800% more after twenty sessions. Research has shown that HBOT improves left ventricular function and improves cardiac performance. Research also suggests that HBOT after a heart attack may decrease mortality rate by 50% and is associated with a reduction in the volume of damaged muscle, a decreased risk of adverse cardiac events, and a decreased amount of time to have relief from ischemic pain. HBOT has been shown by research to induce neuroplasticity and significantly improve symptoms in those with cognitive impairment after a heart attack, including improvement executive functioning, attention, and memory. Research has also shown that the addition of HBOT can make it possible to increase the 5-year survival rate after a heart attack, from 84.4% to 95.9%.
