Concussion

What is a concussion?

Most patients with concussions can receive treatment within 24 hours after a concussion. Call 248-486-3636 to schedule.

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that is a result of a bump or hit to the head or body that causes a rapid back and forth movement to the head and brain. This movement can result in the brain bouncing or twisting in the skull which can lead to chemical changes within the brain and damage to the brain cells. More than 10% of children under the age of 16 have been affected by TBI. Over 90% of TBIs that occur in children are mild. Even if a concussion is considered mild, the effects can be serious. The symptoms from a concussion typically show up soon after the initial injury, but they can take hours or days to present.

Concussion Signs and Symptoms

  • Unable to recall events before and/or after injury
  • Appearing dazed/stunned
  • Confusion, concentration or memory problems
  • Clumsy
  • Slow to answer questions
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Mood, behavior or personality changes
  • Headache/pressure in the head
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Problems with balance
  • Blurry or double vision
  • Light and/or noise sensitivity
  • Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy or groggy
  • May just not “feel right”

Post-concussion syndrome

  • Anxiety
  • Decreased concentration
  • Depression
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Judgment problems
  • Memory problems
  • Sensitivity to noise
  • Severe headaches
  • Visual disturbances

Our Approach to Concussion

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy decreases inflammation, oxygenates the entire body, stimulates the growth of new healthy blood vessels, and releases healthy cells, up to 800% more after twenty sessions. Research has shown that HBOT a significant improvement in cognitive symptoms, improves brain perfusion (blood flow), reactivates neuronal activity in stunned areas of the brain, reduces brain edema and repairs tissue. Research also shows that HBOT improves cellular metabolism, decreases cell death, helps oxidative stress, and promotes neurogenesis. Studies have shown that after HBOT, pediatric patients with concussion had an improvement in cognitive, psychosocial and school functioning scores.

Neurofeedback Therapy

Neurofeedback is an effective treatment for post-concussion syndrome, leveraging advanced neurological therapies to optimize brain function. This process involves using a quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) to identify areas of the brain that are not functioning optimally, either being hypo or hyperactive. Customized treatment plans are then developed, utilizing state-of-the-art equipment to train the brain. This training helps the brain self-regulate and function correctly by responding to visual and auditory stimuli, thereby aiding in the recovery from post-concussion symptoms.
