Stroke
Strokes
Every year in America, over 795,000 people will have a stroke that results in death or disability. For an estimated one-third of these patients, significant assistance with activities of daily living will be required. In an ischemic stroke, cerebral blood flow is impaired and irreversible neural injury occurs within minutes. However, the tissue that surrounds the area directly affected by the ischemic stroke is at risk but has the potential for neural repair. This tissue can remain in a dysfunctional state for months to years after the stroke has occurred. Cell death and a decrease in neuronal activity after an ischemic stroke can be caused by excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis, all of which have a hypoxic factor. Repair of the tissue and generation of new synaptic connections is prevented by hypoxia. Ischemic strokes account for 87% of stroke cases while hemorrhagic strokes account for 13% of stroke cases.
Our Approach to Stroke
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy decreases inflammation, oxygenates the entire body, stimulates the growth of new healthy blood vessels, and releases stem cells, up to 800% more after 20 sessions! Research studies have shown a significant improvement in long and short-term memory, processing speed, gait velocity, upper extremity mobility, sleep, and overall recovery with HBOT.
QEEG & Neurofeedback Therapy (NFB)
A Quantitative EEG shows us electrical activity of the brain. We will be able to see if inflammation is present, if there are any areas of hyper- or hypoactivity, and any areas of disconnect. Using this information, we can focus on the area(s) of the brain most affected and bring those areas back into balance using Neurofeedback Therapy.
Intensive Suit Therapy/Therasuit
The TheraSuit is a soft, breathable, dynamic orthotic consisting of a vest, shorts, knee pads, and specially adapted shoes with hooks and elastic cords that help tell the body how it is supposed to move in space. Combined with our daily intensive program, Suit Therapy can accelerate the development of new motor skills that strengthen muscles and teach the brain and body how to sit, stand, and walk.
