What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a neurological therapy used to identify and correct areas of your brain that are not functioning properly. In a nutshell, neurofeedback is a way to condition and train the brain to optimize its function.  

Our team at The Oxford Center will use a qEEG, or quantitative electroencephalogram, to observe and measure your brain waves. This test will reveal target areas of your brain that are hypo or hyperactive and will allow our team to design a personalized treatment plan tailored to your brain and your needs.  

Using state-of-the-art equipment, we are then able to train your brain by presenting it with a view of its activity. It’s like giving the brain a mirror to see when it is operating at an optimal cognitive balance and when it deviates from that balance.

What is Neurofeedback?


How Does It Work?

Neurofeedback simply measures what the brain is doing and then rewards it for positive behavior. A qEEG is used to measure brain waves and identify areas of the brain that may not be operating correctly.  

When your brain is behaving ideally, the images will be vivid and the music audible. When your brain deviates from the ideal behavior, the images and the music fade. Seeking rewards, the brain will retrain itself to behave as we want it. 

An EEG will be run during each session to track the brain’s growth and progress, and inform the areas that still need to be targeted in future sessions.  

Neurofeedback is to be used in conjunction with other healing modalities and therapies to benefit many conditions. Sometimes the results can be quite spectacular. 


What Do Sessions Look Like?

Patients will begin with a qEEg, which will be used to develop a plan for their therapy. For each session, you will sit back in a comfortable chair and watch relaxing, calming images on a screen and listen to pleasant music through headphones.  

Following the first session, patients will be presented with a stimulus to help their brain learn how to self-regulate and function correctly. For example, a stimulus might be seeing a picture for some patients. If the brain is functioning correctly, the stimulus will appear clearly. If the brain begins to function incorrectly (either hypoactive or hyperactive) the image will begin to blur and your brain will automatically work to regulate itself to see the image clearly.  

This teaches and conditions your brain in a natural way to self-regulate, cope, and manage correctly.
